Purpose. Used by leading hands and supervisors to plan, deliver and record a weekly toolbox talk with their crew.

1.Purpose of toolbox talks

Toolbox talks are short, focused safety and quality conversations held with a crew at the start of a shift. They keep controls fresh, share lessons from incidents and give workers a routine chance to raise hazards. Every department must deliver at least one toolbox talk each week.

2.Choosing a topic

Choose a topic that is relevant to the crew this week: a recent incident or near miss, a seasonal hazard such as heat in the lairage or ice on the loadout dock, a change to a work instruction, or a recurring Meat Hygiene Assessment finding. The People and Safety team publishes a suggested topic calendar each month.

3.Delivering the talk

Keep the talk to ten minutes. State the hazard or issue, describe the control and demonstrate it where possible. Ask the crew what they see on the floor and record their comments. Close by confirming what each person will do differently.

  • State the issue
  • Show the control
  • Ask the crew
  • Record actions

4.Recording attendance

Every attendee must print their name and sign the record. Workers who were absent must receive the talk from the leading hand before their next shift and sign the record then.

5.Follow up

Enter any hazard raised during the talk on the Incident and Hazard Report Form and record the actions in the incident register. File the completed record with the People and Safety team within two working days.
